In chemistry, the term Potential of Hydrogen or pH is referred to as the figure that expresses the acidity or alkalinity of a given solution on a logarithmic scale.

The term “pH” is derived from the German word “potenz” which means “power”. The power is combined with hydrogen. Therefore, pH is used as an abbreviation for “power of hydrogen”.

On a pH scale, 7 is attributed as neutral, higher values as more alkaline, and lower values as more acidic.

The pH is equal to –log10c. In this, c is the concentration of hydrogen ions in moles per liter.

The alkalinity or acidity of an aqueous solution is measured at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.

The pH is a unitless value with a scale of measurement. The value is because of the activity of hydrogen positive ions in the given solution.

The pH is “the negative of the logarithm of the molecular hydronium-ion concentration”.

How to measure the pH value?

The pH value of different elements can be measured using litmus paper or indicators, electrochemical measuring systems, and colorimeters.

Measurement of pH through litmus paper or colorimeter is the easiest way.

However, the litmus test and colorimeter are not accurate enough for high-quality pH measurement because of the value of transition of pH value point depending on the user.


It is another measurement way of pH. The method is simple to use and the hydrogen generation takes place on noble metal.

However, in this method, there can be large errors in pH measurement due to the differences in sample composition.

Therefore, this method of measurement is not dependable in extremely concentrated acids and bases.


It is used to measure the pH value in special cases. In this, due to the measurement technique, any membrane effects are minimized and the method is relatively easy to use.

However, this method measures all the ion activity instead of only hydrogen ion activity.

Ion-selective field-effect transistor (ISFET)

An Ion-selective field-effect transistor (ISFET) has emerged as a relatively new method for pH measurement.

It is a transistor with a power source and divided that is divided by an isolator.

The isolator is made up of metal oxide where the hydrogen ions accumulate. However, this method offers short durability and low long-term stability.

pH measurement electrodes

The pH measurement electrodes are the most common method for measurement. These are electrochemical sensors having a measurement electrode and a reference electrode.

The measurement electrode is filled with a buffer solution of pH value 7.

Therefore, when it is put into a test solution, the electrode measures the change in voltage.

The pH electrodes offer accuracy, reliability and speed of measurement. Of all the pH value measurement alternatives, electrodes are the best one.
