What is the full form of SSC?

SSC is used as an abbreviation for the Staff Selection Commission.

The full form of SSC in Hindi is कर्मचारी चयन आयोग”

SSC is also used as an abbreviation for the Secondary School Certificate.

It is a certification exam which is conducted by various boards of education like state boards, CBSE and ICSE for 10th-grade students.

What is SSC?

The Staff Selection Commission is an organisation under the Indian government which takes care of the recruitment aspect for the different posts of various departments, ministries and offices. Besides, it recruits for subordinate offices as well.

It is one of the major bodies of the Department of Personnel and Training.

The body of the commission consists of a chairman who heads it. There are two other members and a secretary-cum-controller of examinations who assists the chairman.

  • The present Chairman of SSC is Braj Raj Sharma.
  • The headquarters of the Staff Selection Commission is in New Delhi.

The Staff Selection Commission was established in 1975. It has been actively involved in selecting staff for group B and Group C posts.

For this purpose, SSC conducts several exams to conduct the recruitment process. Under these groups, there are more than 20 types of jobs available.

The commission has a regional setup for the smooth conduction of examinations.

Currently, it has 7 regional offices in Kolkata, Delhi, Allahabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Guwahati and Bangalore.

It also has to sub-regional offices at Chandigarh and Raipur.

What are the major functions of SSC?

Some of the major functions which the Staff Selection Commission performs are as follows:-

  • To conduct manpower recruitment of group B posts in the department of Government of India and their subordinate offices
  • To conduct recruitment for the group C posts in the department of Government of India and their subordinate offices
  • Conduct the examinations and interviews for the posts
  • To look after the posting of the candidates and take into account the complaints and grievances registered by the candidates during the recruitment process
  • To provide adequate information and suggestions to the government offices concerning the need for manpower in concerned departments
  • To advise the departments regarding the probable number of recruitment of candidates and the required educational qualifications for the concerned posts
  • To select and prepare questions of the written examinations to be conducted throughout the nation
  • To evaluate the papers given by the candidates and make a list of the selected candidates
  • Perform other functions as entrusted to it by the central government from time to time

What is the eligibility for SSC?

The eligibility to who appeared for the exams of SSC varies from post to post.

Some post required 10th pass while some require a matriculation certificate. Certain posts required the candidate to hold a graduation degree.

However, in most of the cases, a graduation degree in any stream from a recognised University is required to apply.

The age limit for various exams conducted by the Staff Selection Commission varies from 18 years to 32 years.

For some posts, physical fitness and measurements are also required like for the sub-inspector and narcotics department.

Which exams are conducted by SSC?

We have listed below the major examinations that are conducted by the Staff Selection Commission along with the minimum educational and eligibility qualification required.

Combined Graduate Level (CGL)

Citizen of India or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan or Tibetan Refugee or a person of Indian Origin migrated to India

Age limit – 18 to 32 years

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institute or university

Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL)

Citizen of India or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan or Tibetan Refugee or a person of Indian Origin migrated to India

Age limit – 18 to 27 years

Passed 12th standard or equivalent from a recognized board. Science stream with mathematics mandatory for DEOs in C&AG

General Duty Exam for Constables (GD)

Must hold matriculation or 10th pass certificate from a recognised board

Must be an Indian citizen

Should be between 18-23 years of age 

Central Police Organization (CPO)

Age limit – 20 to 25 years

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University

Junior Engineer Exam (JE)

The age limit and educational qualifications vary based on the post applied.
