What is Air and its Composition, Pressure, pollution, and importance?

Introduction:- In this article, we will answer all the questions like What is Air and its Composition? pressure, pollution, and importance in our life. One must be aware that it is one of the essential elements without which we can’t survive. However, in recent times, it was found that its quality has been degraded significantly with time.

What is Air and its composition?

  • Air is a mixture of gaseous and dust particle that surrounds us.
  • It has no color and smell.
  • It is a type of gas which we breathe in and we can’t live without it.
  • Outer space doesn’t contain air or we can say any atmosphere.
  • It contains mass and weight since it is a matter.
  • Air doesn’t have any shape and volume.
  • It is invisible, we can feel it only. The best example is the cool breeze we feel.
  • Moving air is called wind.

The Composition of Air:-

Air is a mixture of 78% nitrogen, 21% of oxygen, 0.09% of argon, 0.04% of carbon dioxide, water vapour and various other gaseous including dust particles.

  • 5 main components of air are nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, argon, other gaseous and dust particle including water vapour.
  • The main and largest component of air is Nitrogen. It constitutes 78% of the earth’s atmosphere.
  • It is a homogenous mixture of gaseous it is not a compound.

What is Air pressure and how it works?

The alternative text used for air pressure are atmospheric pressure and barometric pressure. In simple words, it is the force exerted by the weight of air on the surface of the earth. It is one of the important properties of air that determines the wind and weather patterns all over the globe.

Important facts about Air pressure:-

  • The force exerted by Air depends on the molecule present in it.
  • The molecules present in it also determines the temperature, density, and pressure.
  • The increase in no of molecules present in the air, resulting in increased pressure.
  • Air pressure and density are highest above sea level.
  • It is lowest at higher altitudes due to the presence of fewer molecules.
  • It is measured by using mercury or aneroid barometer.
  • The difference in air pressure causes a change in weather in different places.
  • Hot air rises upward and cold air moves downward.

Uses of Air pressure:-

  • Inflating tyres of the vehicles.
  • Playing musical instrument that uses wind.
  • Blowing up balloons for children.
  • Drinking juices and beverages through a straw.
  • Flushing of toilets.
  • Breathing.
  • Flying of aircraft.
  • Air is used in Vaccum cleaner to suck dust from corners.

Barometer:-

It is a device that is used to measure air pressure. There are two main types of barometer aneroid and mercury barometer. It is commonly used by mariners, and meteorologists to determine the weather in an area. The main difference between aneroid barometer and mercury barometer it the type of element used in it. Aneroid barometer uses metal while mercury barometer uses mercury in tubes. SI Unit of pressure.

What is Air pollution, its causes, effects, types, Air quality Index and Important facts?

Air pollution in simple words means the presence of harmful molecules in the form of gaseous, dust particles and smoke in the environment. There are many reasons which contribute to air pollution like vehicles, chemicals from factories, dust particles, smoke from the burning of plastics and various other objects. Consequently, there are numerous factors that cause air pollution, which we will discuss in-depth in some other article.

This air pollution sometimes leads to a thick cloudy environment that is called smog. The word smog is formed by a combination of smoke and fog.

Types of Air Pollution:-

There are 6 types of Air Pollutants. Which are as follows:-

Effects of Air Pollution:-

  • Pneumonia and Bronchitis are some examples of short term effects.
  • Skin and eye irritation.
  • Headache, dizziness, and nausea.
  • Lungs, Heart and respiratory diseases.
  • Acid Rain is also a reason of air pollution.
  • Air pollution can damage our nervous system, brain, kidneys, and liver.
  • Depletion of the Ozone layer.
  • Increase in greenhouse gaseous like carbon dioxide which raises the temperature, that results in global warming.

What is Air Quality Index?

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is the parameter to report the daily air quality of a place. It figures how clean the is air that we breathe in. It is generally used by government agencies to know its people about the present status of the environment in which we live.

Conclusion:- In this article, we learned about What is air and its composition along with various other important factors that directly affect our life. Please do comment on this article and let us know if you would like us to cover any other topic.
